Valve releases 'Source' for XBox360 developers!
Games Valve opens up to Xbox 360 developers. (extract from palgn.com.au)
There have been quite a few Middleware engines around that give developers the ability to create games without the expense and time investments that are needed to build the game engine from the ground up. Most famous of these is Epic's Unreal Engine which has been a huge success and used in such games as Gears of War, Oblivion and Epic's own Unreal Tournament. The Xbox 360 is soon to get a new kid on the console block, in terms of game engines, being Valve's Source engine.

Valve has announced that their engine is now being offered to developers for use of games on the Xbox360. We were all impressed with the Source engine when it appeared as the backbone of Half-Life 2 on the PC. Since then it has been licensed to be used in quite a few PC games including Sin and Dark Messiah: Might and Magic along with being used in Valve’s own revamp of Counterstrike, Counterstrike: Source.

Half-Life 2, along with the first two add on episodes, the intriguing Portal and the cartoony Team Fortress 2 are scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2007 on Xbox 360. Valve has not been able to extend the same offer of the Source engine to PS3 developers as a result of the difference between the two systems, and instead of developing that version of Half-Life 2 internally it is being co developed with Electronic Arts.

With the addition of Source as a viable game engine to used within developer's games, we can expect to see more quality titles being developed more quickly, for the Xbox 360, like we have on PC.
